Putting Into Practice

This passage is a daily reading from "Divine Intimacy," and is very appropriate for our times:

"If then, the struggle against a certain fault or temptation sometimes becomes very violent and difficult; if in spite of all our efforts, we do not succeed in overcoming nature, let us have confidence in the Blessed Sacrament. When Jesus comes to us, He can calm any storm and give us strength to win any kind of battle. 'The chaste Flesh of Jesus,' says St. Cyril of Alexandria, 'checks the insubordination of ours; by dwelling in us, Christ effectively overcomes the law of the flesh which rages in our members.' The Eucharist, therefore, is our hope both for this life and for the life to come; it sustains us in adversity, fortifies us in the struggle for virtue, saves us for eternal life and brings us to heaven by providing us with the good necessary for our journey."

In the recent book-length interview, Light of the World, Pope Benedict said,

Sexuality has an intrinsic meaning and direction, which is not homosexual…The meaning and direction of sexuality is to bring about the union of man and woman and in this way give humanity posterity, children, future. This is the determination internal to the essence of sexuality. Everything else is against sexuality’s intrinsic meaning and direction. This is a point we need to hold firm, even if it is not pleasing to our age….The issue at stake here is the intrinsic truth sexuality’s significance in the constitution of man’s being. (pp. 151-152)
